We’re Invincible in Our Twenties, We Find Out We’re Wrong in Our Thirties

Cone Peak, Big Sur (CA)

This past weekend, I escaped the city with a couple of buddies for a much needed UnplugYou adventure. Last minute, we changed our original plans to do some snow camping in Tahoe for much warmer climate. Our eyes were set on Cone Peak, the highest coastal point in the lower 48 states, in the Ventana Wilderness.

We were three guys (in our thirties, in the design world, into the outdoors) that were in desperate need to get the hell out of SF for a bit—to leave the stress, emails, and bullshit behind for a few days and get into our “happy place.”

This trip was what I needed to take my mind off of things. More specifically, I needed to re-focus after a brief health scare from the last two weeks. This woke me up to the realization that our bodies are our vehicles to the world—without them, we can’t navigate the awesomeness and shittyness that this life provides us.

On that Sunday morning from our campsite in Ventana, Andy and I summited Cone Peak, 5,155ft high. Spending about 20 minutes at the top, I took in the view, the hike to the summit, and all of the thoughts I had the last few weeks related to this health scare.

I like being outdoors, I like pushing my physical limits, I like accomplishing feats like Cone Peak. If I want to continue doing things like this, I need to pay that much more attention to this vehicle that will allow me to do this for a very long time.

We ended our Sunday covering 18 miles (totalling 23 miles hiked this past weekend). I got back to my apartment in SF, opened a beer, cleaned up, unpacked, and started to plan the next UnplugYou adventure.
